Taking action

The third phase of the strategy is the logical following of the first two phases : after evaluation comes action. It is at this third stage that the organization’s implementation of its sustainable development strategy becomes a reality. The implementation of the chosen measures should not only allow the evolution of a company’s activity, but also permanently establish new,’sustainable’ procedures. The measures to be implemented are by nature extremely diverse. Below we have outlined a few common courses of action for which ECO2 proposes its services.

If the strategy does not immediately enable the improvement of the company’s practices or the the reduction of their impact, it is normally beneficial to establish key performance indicators. These indicators allow us to judge the effectiveness of the actions being taken, and also set an ambitious but realistic goal for each individual area of activity. Additionally, a comprehensive set of indicators is the only concrete means of reporting results in a readable and understandable manner, whether it be internally or for shareholders of the organization. Such practice must be considered as vital for the progress of the strategy for sustainable development.

Increasing awareness of sustainable development is one of the easiest steps to take. It requires the realization by the members or employees of the organization of the need for such a policy, and as a result is often integral to its success. ECO2 offers sustainable development awareness seminars for a variety of audiences - their duration and and content are adapted according to the specific needs of the organization. The main themes which are dealt with are the concept of sustainable development, the associated problems and the tools available to help companies meet these new demands.

Whilst the above may be useful for improving practices, it also possible to pursue partnerships with groups active in this area such as associations or NGOs. The creation of such relationships, whilst imposing demands on both parties, also leads to more dynamic growth and significant mutual benefits in terms of policy and practice. It can also be largely beneficial for an organization’s image, as it is associating its name with a NGO or association which will normally have a positive reputation amongst the general public.

In many cases, the taking of actions takes the form of a Development Project, the management of which we will undertake using our experience in this type of activity. Here are a few examples of the kind of projects we offer to manage for companies :

• development of a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) or a Joint Implementation (JI)
• conversion of a fleet of vehicles from regular fuel to biofuel
• setting up a Company Transportation Strategy for an organization’s transport and logistics (for staff and goods)
• organizing the recycling of materials used by the organization as a whole or on a specific site
• developing a plan for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the organization as a whole or on a specific site
